I wanted to portray the concept of "Who we really are" vs. "Who we want to be". For my first image, I had my model in her natural environment. I placed her in her own apartment with very soft/direct lighting very close to the models face. I wanted the idea of enjoying who we are naturally to come through. I had her choose her favorite top and jewelry to feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera and put on that special lipstick that would say "this is me". I also placed the camera slightly above to make her look delicate and smaller in retrospect to the world she lives in. For my second photograph, we let a week go by before shooting again. My model went on a vacation and returned with a new hair length and color. This is what inspired the second part, "who we want to be". I scouted a random apartments package room for this shot. Placing the model not within her own comfort zone and putting her in an outfit I arranged made her feel more isolated. I relied solely on the recess lighting from above. This gave her more shadow around her eyes and neck area. I placed the model in the corner and said "Imagine this is your editorial shoot for Elle Magazine". Immediately the human mind goes to a face of seriousness and "smize". I wanted her body somewhat restricted and tight to show that these concepts of who we should be are restricting and cold and very symmetrical. The bricks on the wall behind are meant to portray a system or pattern we can't get out of and seemingly blend into. When editing I used a film noir filter for the first picture to show an artistic approach who she is personally and a regular B&W filter for the second photo to have her appear as part of her background.
