When doing this assignment I found that my model and I prefer soft light. Hard lighting is great for wanting to see every detail of a persons face, skin, eyes, hair, and so on. Soft light gives a smooth and clean finished result. When playing with other directions of light I found it fascinating how the mood can shift so quickly. From the front it looks simple and governmental almost. That light direction leaves nothing to mystery. The side gives us shape and symmetry. The mood changes to an almost crime scene idea. This is used for a lot of television shows so that the audience can get a taste of the character without fully exposing them. Light from above gives a very dark tone. The eyes are lost and the viewer has no way to connect to the image personally. Light from below is almost satanic and empowering. The shadows will sometimes make a mask forming on the models face giving mystery and dominance. Many horror films or ads during Halloween use this lighting. Light from behind leaves a feeling of loneliness. Its as if the the person is no longer here, is watching over us, or could also be haunting us. Religious films, photos, and books use this type of lighting as a way of stating that the figure they are talking about is either an idea or has passed away.
